Interviewing? How to Answer 'Tell Me About Yourself'

Written by: Bubblejobs UK

When preparing for an interview this can be the question most people forget to prepare for. However the hiring manager is asking you this to see if your answer reflects whether you are the right fit for the job role. So it is important to keep your answer professional and to show them that you are the best candidate for this role.

What to say

Give a brief summary of your previous qualifications and experience that will match up to the role you are applying for. In addition to this state why you are applying for this job and include how working for their company is the next step for you.

For example…

‘In the past five years I have worked within the media industry, during the last year I have been working in a media agency, where my key responsibilities consisted of devising, planning and managing campaigns. During my time spent here, I learnt a great deal in how to successfully oversee campaigns from start to finish. I achieved this through effectively working towards tight deadlines, managing team members and using my creative flare to give each campaign a unique edge. I am now looking to take my career to the next level and really push myself into a new role.’

What not to say

The interviewer does not want to hear straight away about what you’ve been up to recently or what you like and dislike… This question is not designed for the hiring manager to get to know you on a personal level but more a professional one. If you do no prepare for this question, your answer may seem broad and unspecific.

For example…

‘My name is… I like marketing so I thought I’d apply for this role. At the weekends I like to play football and hangout with friends.’

This is a big no! Keep it relevant and focused towards the role you are applying for. Be confident in the answer you are providing and the best way to do this is by planning and preparing an answer beforehand.
