Burnout Is Not Leadership: The Case for Real Time Off

Written by: Erin Botsford, CFP®

There’s a level of stress some advisors won’t admit to. They believe that working harder, never pausing, and always being "on" is the surest path to success.

But between market swings, client concerns, and economic noise, it can feel like we’re always one step away from crisis mode. And when you’re the one steering the ship - for your clients, your staff, and your own family - the pressure builds… fast.

Here’s what I’ve learned after 30+ years in this business: If you don’t step away, your business will suffer. And so will you.

I’m not talking about a long weekend where you check emails between spa appointments. I mean real, restorative time away from the day-to-day. Time to breathe, to think, to reset.

You might be thinking:

  • "I can’t step away. The wheels will come off."
  • "Clients expect me to be available 24/7."
  • "If I leave, things won’t get done right."

I used to believe all of that too. Until I learned that the real risk wasn’t stepping away. The real risk was burning out.

Taking time off is a business strategy.

The first time I took a true vacation, something surprising happened: My business got better.

Why?

  • I came back with clarity and fresh ideas.
  • My team stepped up and grew into their roles.
  • I stopped being the bottleneck.

When you trust your team and train them well, stepping away doesn’t cause chaos. It creates capacity. That’s when you go from running a practice to building a business.

And yes, that also means:

  • Stop using out-of-office messages. Clients want to feel like someone is always watching their portfolio.
  • Set a service standard. In my firm, every client email got a response within one hour, even when I was on another continent.
  • Share your photos wisely. Posting vacation pictures can (sometimes) rub clients the wrong way. Save them for your personal accounts, not your firm's LinkedIn page.

Your clients don’t care about your time off. They care about consistency, reliability, and trust.

The twist: You can only deliver that level of service if you’re not exhausted.

If you’re feeling drained, irritable, or disconnected from the work you used to love, you don’t need more hustle. You need a reset.

Here’s What I Recommend:

  • Schedule a real break. Not in theory. On your calendar.
  • Train your team on how to handle emails and client needs.
  • Set a service standard your firm can commit to.
  • Reframe rest as a leadership decision, not a luxury.
