Prospects are no longer just Googling for financial advisors – they're opening ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity and asking for recommendations by name, niche, and location. If you're not showing up, you're losing high-intent prospects before they ever find you.
Open any AI tool and paste this:
"I am a [describe your ideal client] in [your city and state]. I am looking for a financial advisor who specializes in [your niche]. Who would you recommend and why?"
Here's how to read what comes back.
A competitor shows up and you don't. Ask the AI why it recommended them. The answer will tell you exactly what's missing from your own presence.
No one gets recommended. Ask what it would need to see before it could confidently make a recommendation. That's your to-do list.
You show up, but the description is wrong. Outdated content is shaping your first impression before you get a chance to. That's fixable – but only once you know it's happening.
Fix What the Audit Reveals
The gaps are almost always the same four things.
Your niche is too vague. "Comprehensive financial planning" doesn't match a specific prompt. "Retirement planning for physicians with equity compensation" does. State your niche plainly, more than once, across your site.
You have no structured proof. AI tools lean on testimonials, case studies, and third-party mentions to decide who's credible enough to recommend. If your site has none, you're asking AI to vouch for you with nothing to point to.
Your media mentions aren't connected to your firm. A podcast appearance or a local press quote does nothing for AI visibility if it isn't linked back to you somewhere AI can find it. A dedicated media page closes that gap.
Your content is thin or stale. AI tools weight recency. A site with a few posts from 2023 reads very differently than one publishing monthly on the topics your clients are actually asking about.
Run It Again in 90 Days
AI recommendations shift as tools update their models and as your content changes. Run the same prompt again in three months. If the answer hasn't moved, you know which gap still needs work. The advisors showing up in AI results today started fixing these gaps six months ago. The best time to start is now.
