Scaling Success: How Envestnet Powers RIA Growth and Client Retention

The 2025 Charles Schwab IMPACT Conference in Denver brought together some of the industry’s most influential voices, with Sean Meighan, Head of RIA Distribution at Envestnet, standing out for his candid perspectives on the future of RIA growth, scaling, and client success. At a time when Registered Independent Advisors (RIAs) face mounting pressure to deliver both superior service and operational scale, Meighan’s approach – and the evolving Envestnet platform – offers actionable best practices for advisory firms aiming to thrive.

Scale, Consistency, and the RIA Growth Imperative

When asked about the best practices for growing an RIA business sustainably, Meighan was direct: “Scalability is the theme here. Everybody’s talking about scale.” Yet, for Meighan, scale alone isn’t sufficient. He explained, “Scale just allows you to serve more, monetize your business. There’s this other side around clients' standards that I think of more around, not just scale, but consistency—consistency in process, consistent outcomes, predictable outcomes.”

Meighan’s advice for RIAs is to leverage technology not simply to deliver services to more clients, but to do it in a way that’s “systematized,” so the results are repeatable and dependable across client portfolios. Firms still relying on manual processes and spreadsheets risk portfolio dispersion and inconsistent outcomes, while solutions like Envestnet’s UMA (Unified Managed Account) technology offer a pathway toward streamlined, predictable investor results. “To me, that’s a big part of what Envestnet tries to solve for—consistency among investor outcomes across the RIA market,” he added.

The Platform Advantage: Offload Complexity, Elevate Growth

As RIAs grapple with balancing organic growth and operational demands, Meighan’s message is clear: double down on client experience and let Envestnet shoulder the back office. “It shouldn’t be a balance. I want them to focus on the former and let us do the latter. That should be the balance,” Meighan said. “For me, I'd like this to look like one giant seesaw where we offload all of their back office for them. We can do their trading, rebalancing, help them with their research—everything across the board around financial planning—and then let them market growth organically.”

Advisor organic growth rates remain modest, a trend Meighan attributes in part to operational frictions. In his view, the optimal strategy is to “outsource everything that you possibly can and do what makes the most sense for your business, which is serve your clients.” The flexibility of Envestnet’s platform extends to firms of all sizes, with UMA technology designed for scalability. Whether a firm manages $100 million or $100 billion in assets, “our UMA tech really started in the RIA space where firms that had 5, 6, 7 custodial accounts, at different SMA managers, would collapse those down into one single UMA. That’s great for a large RIA that has direct accounts at certain asset managers that want some simplicity. But the $100 million firm, they just don’t want to have to hire the next FTE. They’re trying to grow, they’re trying to scale.”

Building Teams, Focusing on Service

The service model is a central part of Meighan’s strategy. Envestnet's national sales team engages deeply with RIA clients, helping them shape their growth trajectory and operational approach. “We’re in RIA offices, daily across the country, regional events, we’re taking as much feedback as we possibly can. We’re in their business as much as they’ll let us be in there,” Meighan said.

Envestnet’s philosophy is to inject technology that enables RIAs to hire for value, rather than for volume. “We are all about bringing on the right tech folks that can leverage technology to not have to hire another FTE, and then spend the money on marketing, client appreciation events, be out in your community. It’s a better use of everybody’s time,” Meighan explained.

By providing modular tech solutions, Envestnet enables RIAs to build teams aligned with their culture and service standards while maximizing operational efficiency. Their Tamarac platform integrates CRM, billing, and financial planning, while MoneyGuide supports personalized planning and reporting, leaving RIAs free to focus on what sets their firm apart.

Standardizing Processes, Automating Workflows

Process standardization and workflow optimization are “overlooked growth levers,” according to Meighan. “In the RIA space, most firms think of Tamarac as a reporting, rebalancing, and billing system. We also have a fully integrated CRM function, financial planning function through MoneyGuide, and our managed account offer.” For RIAs dealing with fragmented systems and mounting tech budgets, Envestnet’s bundled solutions streamline back office processes and reduce silos.

Meighan’s advice for RIAs torn between “best-of-breed” approaches is pragmatic: “You immediately realize, oh no, now I’ve got a tech budget, now I have to hire a CTO, now my systems aren’t talking to each other, and there’s a panic moment for them. We can help solve that within reason.” Whether firms use Envestnet as an end-to-end platform or a modular solution for functions like rebalancing or billing, the key is integration. “We have the tech stack where we can be modular if we need to be. Obviously, we’d like to be more than that, but we can play that game, too.”

Driving Client Retention Through Data and AI

The industry’s fascination with artificial intelligence became a focal point as Meighan explained Envestnet’s differentiated approach. “Everybody's here talking about AI, right? If it's not AI, it's alts,” he remarked. The company’s strategy centers on actionable insights and proactive advisor support rather than just data summarization.

“Envestnet’s AI strategy out of the gate was always around the next best action for an advisor, not summarize the meeting you just had. We’re running 20 million scenarios a day across our database to say, ‘What should you do next? What are the blind spots in your business?’ That’s the approach that we've led with, and we think, frankly, RIAs appreciate that a little bit, because it's more of a proactive AI application, not necessarily a reactive process simplification,” Meighan said.

Envestnet’s data-intensive analytics identify advisor opportunities, highlight risk exposures, and provide recommendations, driving deeper client relationships and better retention. But Meighan also acknowledges that the firm is not the entire tech stack. “Any AI that we build is likely going to service the data that we have on our platform. There’s great AI firms that can sit on top of our database and other data lakes that are out there. We’d rather our RIAs go down that road, if it’s a cross-platform, cross-vendor type AI solution,” he explained.

Innovations on the Horizon: What’s Next for Envestnet?

Meighan concluded with a look ahead, promising ongoing innovations centered around AI, data, and advisor experience. “In the short term on the innovation front, it's going to center around AI. We're using it internally in our business today to do coding to speed up our releases, to have more predictable outcomes. You'll see that take the next step next year.”

Envestnet aims to make platform enhancements accessible and practical, even as its larger vision extends to deep ecosystem integrations and empowering RIAs with real-time insights and workflow optimization. From unified managed accounts to household modeling, alternative investments, and enhanced client reporting, Envestnet is committed to modular power, ecosystem flexibility, and advisor-centric innovation.
