Alternative assets under management

By asset class, 2010-2028F

What is this chart showing?

  • Global alternative assets under management (AUM) have grown at an annualized growth rate of 11% from 2010 to 2023 with AUM of roughly $19 trillion in 2023.

Why is it important?

  • Private equity and hedge funds are the largest of the alternative asset classes, with private equity expected to increase its share of the global alternative AUM total from 28% in 2023 to 35% by 2028.

  • Asset growth is expected to decelerate to 8.4% (2022 – 2028 annualized growth) from 12.3% from 2016 through 2022, somewhat due to the law of large numbers. However, despite this deceleration, asset growth is stable without signs of widespread distress.

  • Importantly, the “dry powder”, or capital committed by investors that is yet to be invested, is still expected to increase and reach roughly $5 trillion by 2028.
