Picture an advisor sitting across from a video producer before they start filming, gripping a printed script like it's a life raft. "What if I say the wrong thing?" she asks. "What if compliance kills the whole video?" The producer asks her to put the script down. She looks at him like he’s asked her to drive a windy mountain road at night without headlights. Twenty minutes later, she's telling him, unscripted, unguarded, about the satisfaction she derived from talking a client off a ledge in 2008, and how that’s when she knew she’d never leave the business. That's the video that soars. The script never would have.
In my line of work (creating unscripted, interview-based video for advisors and firms), one of the most common worries advisors express to me is that if they don’t carefully script what they’re going to say on camera, they might inadvertently set off compliance flags. In other words, if they’re too authentic, they might end up with a video they can’t legally use.
I respond by gently pointing out that authentic marketing is one of the most effective compliance strategies you can implement. Common violations like performance promises, guarantees, and misleading superlatives cluster almost exclusively in over-scripted, outcome-selling content.
A good video interview doesn’t ask you to promise, or even imply, anything about outcomes. It’s warm and fuzzy. Its objective is to uncover the root of your passion so your prospective clients know that you aren’t just about the numbers; you’re there to lend your expertise as a caring friend.
When you talk about the human stuff — your beliefs, your philosophy, your personal bonds with your clients, and the joy you derive from helping them through life’s ups and downs — you naturally steer clear of compliance-triggering declarations. Videos that market a human-focused narrative breeze through compliance review because they contain no claims. They don’t concentrate on the basics of what financial advisors are supposed to do, but on who you are as a person.
Videos like this are not only more compliance-friendly, but also much, much more compelling to watch and more likely to initiate the kind of genuine emotional bond that’s the foundation of a long-term relationship. Authentic marketing doesn’t come across as fake, contrived, or, perhaps most importantly, boring. It just puts your beautiful humanity on display to attract like-minded clients to your practice.
The unscripted aspect of authentic video work is crucial to its quality and effectiveness. Instead of pushing you in front of a camera to recite carefully-planned marketing copy, authentic video teams create a warm space where you can speak from the heart about what really matters to you. In those visceral moments where you light up with passion and joy without meaning to, your prospects see that you’re trustworthy and emotionally accessible.
Authenticity works well for marketing advisory practices because it sidesteps topics that could lead to compliance issues and answers the prospective client’s most burning question: “Can I trust this person?”
The best way to show that you can be trusted is to show the real person behind your advisory work. By presenting yourself authentically, you free your audience to believe you. They’re seeing you, not a performance. They sense someone who genuinely cares about their clients and experiences the same wonderful breadth of human emotions as they do.
Of course, compliance is always non-negotiable. All marketing material still has to be submitted for compliance review, and occasionally, even unscripted video can trigger a compliance flag.
When this happens with a scripted video, the flagged item is often crucial to the message, and removing it could undermine the whole project. Conversely, when a compliance officer flags something in an authentic, unscripted video, it’s rarely a big deal to fix it, because the problematic statement is usually just a disposable aside. The core of the video is you and your deeper truth — and that’s what matters to your future clients. You, the 100% genuine human advisor are, and always will be, compliant.
