Is the State of Your Business a Reflection of You?

3unning your own business is not easy. On any given day a multitude of problems can arise. When they do, who does everyone turn to? YOU.

“I think that maybe inside any business, there is someone slowly going crazy.” –Joseph Heller

When a coaching client starts complaining about problems in her business, I like to ask this question:

In what way is the state of your business a reflection of you?

You see, I strongly believe the state of a business accurately reflects its leader.

Michael E. Gerber says it this way in his book, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It…

“So if your business is to change – as it must continuously to thrive – you must change first. If you are unwilling to change, your business will never be capable of giving you what you want.”

So, if you approach solving the problem from that perspective, the solution can be discovered by looking to the person staring back at you in the mirror.

This is where a good dose of honesty, humility and authenticity can come in handy. A probing question to ask yourself might be,

“Who am I being that created this issue?”

Or… “Who am I NOT being – but need to be – that created this issue?”

If you get honest with yourself, the answer won’t always be easy to accept.

But what usually follows is a sense of empowerment because it suddenly occurs to you that you are more in control of what happens in your business than you realize.

What you will usually find is the business owner/leader/manager is the responsible party for breakdowns that occur in the business. It’s not the prima-donna-employee or the difficult-to-please-client.

What it boils down to is this….

If you want to improve your business, you’ve got to improve yourself.

When you improve, everything around you improves. Your business, your relationships, your family, your marriage and your income.

Grow yourself to grow your business.

Grow yourself to grow your income.

Grow yourself to grow your relationships.

The bottom line is your results are a reflection of you.

So, who is the person you need to be in order to create the results that you want?

When you get clarity on that, you realize that it’s a place to come from, not a place to get to.

The most effective leaders know this is not a journey to travel alone. A trained coach can be the best investment in yourself and your business you’ll ever make. Check out my recent blog post, 9 Reasons to Hire a Professional Coach to find out why.

Make a quality decision to be that person starting now. Not some day in the future when things get better. Because they won’t. Until you do.
