Why Don’t We Care More

Complacency of our society causes us to focus on the positive and ignore challenges.

We frequently avoid situations like mental and physical health, common courtesy and attacking providers. For example, how many customers make life difficult for people filling prescriptions when the doctors, insurance companies etc. caused the difficulty.

if you feel you have become overly self-centered, a shift requires changing habits. Start by looking at your patterns. Use someone close to you as a coach or sounding board to help you catch yourself from falling into those routine behaviors, and make deliberate efforts to be more emotionally generous.

Collaboration is a key factor both improving results and reducing selfishness. Are you searching for new alternatives, listening to others, focusing on facts rather than hierarchy and opinion, and inputting new parameters into solutions. I am always impressed with sports stars who credit their team rather than trying to build their own ego. Similarly, parents are great supporting little kids, but then tension seems to dominate as they grow older.

A little caring can also go along away. One of the approaches to ensuring remote work can work is to support, include and acknowledge participants . Are they really understanding and participating. This is of particular concern with diverse groups and skill sets. Accounting presentations are easily boring and misunderstood. How many members who may be creative, technical or administrative really understand EBITA?

While many issues require evaluation, there are many opportunities to capitalize on the need for intuition and innovation. The pandemic has stimulated new opportunities like work from home, on-line shopping and virtual learning that need to be allowed to reach their potential. For example, small Universities are sharing courses with other local Universities to expand the offerings to students. These need more analysis and objective thought rather than simple opinions to have success.

We can generally afford more risk. People are more averse to risk than they are analytical. We always need to evaluate results and consider alternatives. We need to consider that the upside of many risks is much greater than limited downside. We need to understand outcomes and accept failure as part of the process.

Psychological issues need to be managed rather than feared. Hatred, threats and extremes are the tools of the extremists. They need to be managed, understood and not allowed to disrupt our efforts. In particular we need to build positive relationships and communication rather than lessening them.

Stress is a key barrier to caring. We are too busy, use our phone too much, seem to have little time to relax, and have too much personal and outside pressure. I have friends who are supposed to walk every day and can’t find 15 minutes. Relax. Say please thank you and how are you? Find friends to support or just people to support or just say hello.

Caring should not disappear just because we are busy. Little efforts can bring significant result. Just think about caring more and do it.
