Embracing Eccentricity

Embracing our eccentricity means that being different is a choice available to each of us. In a world that tries to make us like everyone else, eccentricities stand out. And it takes courage to show up with our uniqueness.

We are taught to suppress our quirks, conform to societal norms, and strive for a sense of normalcy. However, these norms prevent us from fully expressing our true selves.

Our genuine emotions are often suppressed by the societal norms and expectations that dictate how we should behave and interact with people. The pressure to conform to certain ideals, in our behavior and appearance, leads to a sense of inauthenticity and self-doubt. This results in a disconnection from our true selves, leaving us feeling unseen and unheard.

But the truth is, we are not here to fit in or win a popularity contest.

Why Being Authentic is Essential

As James Hollis writes, “We are here to be eccentric, different, a little strange, to add our small piece, our little clunky selves to the great mosaic of being. As the gods intended, we are here to become more and more ourselves.”

Embracing our eccentricity can be difficult in a world that values conformity and sameness. It can feel uncomfortable to stand out, be different, and take risks. However, our uniqueness is what makes us who we truly are.

By embracing our eccentricities, we allow ourselves to fully express our creativity and to share our unique perspectives. We can make an impact that is entirely our own. We are not for everyone. And everyone is not for us.

It is freeing to simply be as quirky as we choose. When we stop worrying about fitting in and start embracing our unique qualities, we free ourselves from the pressure of constantly trying to please. We can live authentically, without fear of judgment or rejection. It’s our choice which path to embark.
