Avoid Making a Bad Video in 3 Steps

Can you be great the first time you try something?

Maybe, as a fluke. But, in general, practice makes perfect. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll do.

That’s certainly true when it comes to recording a video.

Just ask Liz Tkacz Breitner. She admits that she didn’t take preparation for her first video very seriously … at least not at first. Sure, she got the emails from our Quick Start mini-course, and she may have read some of them. But she was operating on the assumption that showing up is at least half the battle.

Yes, showing up is important. In reality, showing up and being prepared is truly the key to success.

So, how do you get prepared for your video record session?

For Liz, it took a practice session and a disappointing video clip to help her put together a plan for success. Here’s what she learned (the hard way):

Follow Liz’s 3 steps from the video and also consider these additional tips on ways to get the most out of your Idea Kit practice session:

  1. Use your practice session to test location, wardrobe, and hand gestures. Don’t be afraid to throw it all out the window to get the perfect look. Like Liz, you can call an audible and switch locations between your practice session and your real record session.
  2. Think outside your office walls. Your home might be more inviting. You can also check out alternative locations on websites such as Peerspace for affordable options that you can rent by the hour.
  3. Consider getting your hair and makeup done. Your video is evergreen, so you’ll want to look your best. Take a little care to make sure your hair looks good … that goes for men, too! If you don’t want to wear makeup, consider a bit of blotting paper or powder to reduce shine.

Make sure to practice your script before you record. When you practice, choreograph some hand gestures to go with what you are saying. Watch this video to get our 3 tips for body language.
